How can I improve my websites onsite SEO?

So many digital marketing agencies frequently discuss complicated things that a business can do to improve their seo, such as building high-quality backlinks.

Yet, what some marketing agencies forget to talk about is the real SEO basics, such as onsite seo.

With onsite seo you can often make quick improvements to a website, yet as always, we only recommend that you use white hat methods. If you are in doubt about how to implement seo then we would also strongly recommend talking to an white hat seo company first.

So, here’s some of the ways onsite seo can be used to improve a website:

Think of your customers as the number one priority

So many businesses, and SEO agencies for that matter fall into the trap of just implementing SEO with the sole focus of trying to improve where the business ranks.

Well, you may now be thinking well, that’s the whole point, no?

Well, not really, as the really good seo agencies focus on helping their customers first and foremost.

So, what do we mean by this?

Well, it may well be easy to write loads of text, which includes loads of keywords that you would like your business to rank for within the text. Then you may put a load of internal links on the page also, and then optimise the anchor text with the same keywords, yet this is an example of really rubbish and outdated seo.

It just focuses on seo and not offering a good user experience.

So, let’s think of an example to illustrate the point here, imagine you have a DIY problem, and you have a tap in your kitchen that’s leaking.

This is aggravating you, so you look on Google how to fix a leaking tap. Now let’s say you find one business, you read the text on that website yet it makes no sense at all, it just keeps stating the words “emergency plumber” over and over again.

You think that’s useless, so you quickly leave that website.

Then you find another website, this website offers really good advice, it walks you through the entire process, it even has an embedded YouTube video which has a plumber explaining what to do when fixing the tap.

Now, which website do think has better SEO?

Well this is a no brainer to us, as it’s the second website, the one that offers good advice.

The first website uses really old seo methods, which are most likely going to result in the reader being annoyed that you’ve wasted their time.

This will result in a higher bounce rate for that website, so this could damage the businesses seo efforts if the entire website also has a high bounce rate.

Then this website is likely to have very low time on site figures as well, meaning the reader may only read the website for a few mere seconds, that’s before deciding to leave.

This is not good for the businesses seo neither.

Yet the second business, the one that has good seo is helping someone to solve a problem, and because of this the bounce rate is likely to be very low, and also the time on site figure is likely to be very high, perhaps over 7 minutes because that’s how long the YouTube video lasts explaining how to fix the tap.

So, before we start suggesting ways that you can improve your businesses onsite seo, we thought it was a really good idea to mention that helping your customers must come first, then seo second.

Meta title’s and meta descriptions

Okay, so let’s say now someone is looking for a divorce solicitor on Google, and they are presented with 10 organic links to click on.

Which businesses do you think will be selected? The ones which write a meta title and meta description that just has keywords all crammed into the sentence, or the meta title and meta description which instantly makes it obvious that the business offers what the customer is looking for.

Now, if you haven’t got a clue what a meta title, or a meta description is, well these are the descriptions of what that page can offer, and these appear in the search results.

So, an example of poor seo would be a meta title that simply reads:

Meta title: Divorce solicitors, divorce lawyers, family lawyers.

This is really poor seo, that’s because it is just a blatant attempt to try and cram in as many phrases as possible that the business wishes to rank for.

As on the other hand if you write a meta title that reads as follows:

We are experienced family lawyers, if your going through a divorce we can offer family mediation

Now this is much more compelling, as it talks to the person like a human, rather than just listing a load of keywords that the business wants to rank for.

H1 to H6 tags

You can use these to split up a large block of writing, plus they also tell the search engines that the title is a heading tag.

You can normally select header tags from H1, through to H6.

However, the same rules apply, don’t try and cram the heading tags with keywords you want the website to rank for.

Instead help a reader of that page to skim-read and find a title that answers their question.

For example, you may title one heading tag “mediation”- this way someone skim reading wanting to find out information about mediation can jump to that part of the page that answers their question.

Internal backlinks

Most websites have a lot of information, and in a blog post you may not be able to explain everything all at once.

So, for example, you may well be writing a blog post about how to start the divorce process, and you may recommend different ways to cope when going through a divorce.

Then you may remember that you have previously written a whole blog post on that subject, that offers advice on how to cope during a divorce, so you may use an internal link to offer the reader to also read that page as well.

Does your business require help with its SEO?

If your business requires further help with its seo then why not call us?

What does “NAP” even mean?

It’s fair to say that a lot of SEO companies can use way too much marketing jargon when describing their services. One such term that you may have heard your seo agency use is the term “NAP”.

And if your business has ever invested in local seo, well you have probably heard of this term long before now.

So, without further ado let’s have a look at what the term NAP actually means.

So, what does term NAP actually mean?

NAP simply stands for the name of a business; the businesses address and the companies phone number- it really is that simple.

Now you’re probably thinking why is this so important when it comes to implementing SEO?

Well there’s a good reason for that, and that’s because Google and the other search engines want to return the best quality answers they can to a query.

And by having NAP correctly implemented allows the search engines, like Google, to have greater confidence that your business key contact details are correct.

Let’s look at an example, let’s say there are two local dentists, let’s call them dental practice A, and dental practice B for simplicity.

Now dental practice A has recently moved address, so the business has subsequently updated its website to reflect this, yet the companies Google My Business account has not yet been updated, and there are some old business citations that still state that the business is still at its old business address.

These means that the algorithms that Google uses, and the other search engines may get confused where the business actually is based! For example, is it at the old address or the new one?

Now take dental practice B, they have employed an SEO agency and they have gone through the website to make sure the NAP details are correctly implemented on the website. So, they have listed the companies NAP details in the footer of the website, as well as on the contact us page.

They have also gone through every single business citation as well for business B, that’s to make sure that the NAP information is consistent with the website.

The seo company has then made sure that the Google My Business account also has the correct NAP details for business B. So yes, that digital marketing agency has been busy little bees!

So just to reiterate the point here, business A has its NAP details split between its new address and old address. That’s while business B has its NAP details correct, that’s in the sense they all saying the same thing.

Now which business do you think Google will have greater confidence in, in terms that the business details are correct?

Of course business B, as that dental practice does not have any NAP information that is incorrect.

Make sure your businesses NAP details are kept up to date

So, here’s the point that we are getting at here, it’s really important to keep your businesses NAP details updated.

This is particularly important when you change address, or company phone number.

So if I get my businesses NAP information correct, will my business will get displayed on the first page of Google?

Not quite. The reason your business probably won’t get displayed on the first page of Google is because this is just one part of the SEO process.

For example, in SEO we refer to all the different SEO areas that we can improve as ranking signals, now its widely thought that Google takes into account over 200 different signals, that’s when working out how important your website is.

So, getting the NAP information correct is important, but its only a small slice of the cake.

Okay so what are business citations?

Let’s say you know the name of a business, yet you’ve forgotten its phone number, so you ask Google what’s the phone number to XYZ Ltd.

Google replies with an answer, and in the results will normally be loads of business directory websites which cite the businesses contact details.

Its these pages that we SEO’s refer to as business citations.

Our business simply hasn’t got the time, how much does your business charge for SEO?

Our digital marketing agency charges a monthly fee, this fee is solely dependent on how much competition your business faces.

So, for instance, let’s say you run a legal practice, such a business will normally face a high amount of competition online. So, if your business faces more competition often the standard of SEO set by your competitors will also be very high.

We would therefore need to evaluate your website, so if you would like to obtain a no obligation quote, then why not give us a call?

What is Google My Business?

As business owners, or for those that work in online marketing, we all know that we are constantly bombarded with requests for businesses to sign-up and register on a website to help promote the business.

Whether this be a business directory, or a business that promises to sell you leads. Yet, this means that loads of businesses just think its another request that may not help the business.

Yet, there’s one website that’s most definitely worth registering your business on, and that’s Google My Business.

Whether you run a massive business, or you run a small business it doesn’t matter, that’s because Google My Business could help your business.

So, this blog post is dedicated to explaining just that, that’s how Google My Business can help your business.

So why sign-up?

In a nutshell Google My Business is useful, especially if your implementing local SEO.

So, for example, lets say you run a local pet shop, and you sell a large selection of dog food.

Well, there will probably be people looking to find a local pet shop, so when they search “local pet shops near me”- well your business may just show up in the Google My Business results.

Some seo companies call these the map listings, some refer to them as the local business listings.

However, for simplicity lets refer to them as the Google My Business results.

Now, your seo agency may well be working diligently on improving your businesses organic seo, yet normally most businesses want to also rank in the Google My Business listings as well, so that’s right for this your going to need to sign-up for a Google My Business account.

What does NAP mean?

NAP quite simply means the name of your business, its address and the businesses phone number.

Digital marketing agencies use NAP to improve your businesses local SEO. For example, a white hat seo agency may build business citations, optimise your Google My Business account as well as making sure the NAP information is on your website.

Okay, so how can I optimise my Google My Business listing?

Here’s some of the things that our marketing agency would work on in order to optimise a business Google My Business account.

Opening hours

We would add the opening hours for your business.

Local telephone number

Sometimes its unavoidable for a business to use a mobile number, for example a sole trader plumber will often have to use a mobile number.

However, with that said if you can use a local landline number then we would recommend that you do that.

As this then sends another signal to Google that your business is based in the city or town where you say your business is.

Give a sense of what your business is like

Its important to give a sense of what your business is like, for example if you run a marketing agency, well why not add pictures of your team, also where your business is located.

You may also wish to add the company logo as well.

Don’t forget to add your businesses address, also its important to remember that your companies address is part of your businesses NAP information, so make sure the address you mention is the same with what’s on your website.

So in nutshell you should have exactly the same NAP information on your website, as what’s on your Google My Business account, also the information should be the same on your businesses citations.

Why is important to be consistent when citing my businesses NAP information?

If you were to say write your address as “New Road” on your Google My Business account, yet cite your businesses address as “New RD” on your website, well this may be viewed as a conflicting citation.

What this basically means is that this may cause some confusion, not to us humans as would often know that Rd means Road, but to the algorithms, well some may think that the two addresses are not the same.

Now some seo companies now believe that the algorithms are more sophisticated than they once were, which is true, yet why chance it?

That is why digital marketing agencies will often still try and ensure that the businesses NAP details perfectly match.

Any differences in the businesses NAP details may cause confusion, which may mean that a business stands a decreased chance of being displayed in the local business listings.

Are business reviews important?

In a nutshell yes, they are. Imagine for a second you run a pizza take-away shop, and one business has no business reviews what so ever.

Yet across the road is a pizza take-away shop that has 20 positive reviews. All the reviews are genuine, so they are left by real customers.

Yell, most seo businesses would think that the pizza shop that has the 20 positive reviews stands a much better chance of being displayed in the local business listings than the one that doesn’t.

However, you also have to know that this is just one ranking signal, most seo companies will be optimising may ranking signals, so you shouldn’t just think that business reviews are the be and end all.

Here’s another important point, don’t be tempted to write fake business reviews yourself. The reason you shouldn’t write fake business reviews is Google, and the other search engines are super clever, and they can spot fake business reviews.

If your business does have fake business reviews, well it may stand a much lesser chance of being displayed in the local business listings.

Should we be updating our account?

Yes, do not create a Google My Business account and then not update crucial business information, such as your companies phone number if it changes.

Not only can this be annoying for your potential customers, but if you don’t update your account, well this won’t help your SEO.

Okay, so this sounds time consuming, can your SEO agency help?

Yes, why not give us a call to discuss how we can offer local or organic SEO to your business.

Which SEO tools does your marketing agency recommend using?

Whether your business implements SEO inhouse, or you employ a well-known SEO company, one thing is for sure, and that is often seo tools are needed.

Quite simply put seo tools can be very useful, whether that’s checking which backlinks are connecting to your website, or simply how many organic visitors you are gaining per month.

So, in a nutshell, if your implementing seo, well you will often need one of these tools:

Google Analytics

Quite simply put a massively useful tool. Google Analytics is very easy to use and can give you important information on how well your businesses SEO is doing.

For example, a simple line graph can be used to plot how many visitors your website is getting each day, each week or each month. In matter of fact you can specify the exact timeframe where you want to obtain data for.

So for example, some businesses will want to monitor visitor numbers at an important time of the year such as the build-up to Christmas.

Often therefore digital marketing agencies will use Google Analytics to monitor website visitor numbers. Then they may adjust their marketing strategy accordingly, such as should they invest more in social media adverts?

Or, is the business gaining the number of organic visitors that they had hoped for?

Also you can look at other important metrics, such as your websites bounce rate for example. For those that do not know, the bounce rate of the website is the percentage of visitors that have more or less decided to leave your website straightaway.

So, this is a really useful metric, as if your business is creating content marketing, such as blog posts well you should be monitoring how long people are spending reading your work, or are they simply leaving your company’s website straightaway, which is then contributing to a higher bounce rate?

Aiming to reduce a business bounce rate can sometimes be rather complicated, so you may wish to contact a digital marketing agency for help.

Google Search Console

Most businesses will have heard of Google Analytics, yet some businesses may not have heard of Google Search Console.

Google Search Console is the new name that was given to replace Google Webmaster Tools.

This is a really useful tool, for example you can obtain information on which search queries your website is being returned for.

This is really useful, so say for example you run a solicitor’s practice, well you may want to promote a service that your solicitors practice offers, such as employment law advice.

So, by working with your seo company, or by implementing seo inhouse you can use your Google Search Console account to see where you are placed for important phrases that you want your business to rank for, such as “employment solicitors”.

Also, what’s great is you can also see how your website may well be improving over time, so comparing where your website ranks now, say compared to one month ago.

Why should our business use such SEO tools if we employ an seo agency?

Many businesses simply outsource all of their seo requirements to an seo company, and therefore do not check there Google Analytics account themselves.

However, we would strongly recommend that your business also uses your Google Analytics account, and Google Search Console account as well.

The reason is, your seo company should send you a monthly report, sometimes some businesses will also obtain a weekly seo report.

With this report you can then check the figures against your Google Analytics account.

So, say for example your seo business states you have received 1000 new organic visitors that month, well you can then check that within your Google Analytics account.

Also, there may well be months where the SEO does not improve, or that the number of organic visitor numbers drops slightly, you can ask the seo agency if they are aware of this, and why they think that is so.

Can our marketing agency help your business?

We offer quality white hat SEO, if your business would like to find out more about our seo services, then why not give us a ring?
